RIP My Fave… The Swayze

September 14, 2009 by lalablahblah

dirtydancing(1)

Dear Swayze,

I will miss you terribly. Thank you for dancing dirty in the lake, taking baby out of the corner, kicking snooty rich guy ass at the Roadhouse, donning that teeny Chippendale bow tie and swirling your crotch around on SNL,  hosting “a day with the girls” in Too Wong Fu. Thanks for being that quintessential eighties icon. Big muscles, big mullet, big heart.

Love Always LALA

“Patrick Swayze, the balletically athletic actor who rose to stardom in the films “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” and whose 20-month battle with advanced pancreatic cancer drew wide attention, died Monday. He was 57.

His publicist, Annett Wolf, told The Associated Press in Los Angeles that Mr. Swayze died with family at his side.

Mr. Swayze’s cancer was diagnosed in January 2008. Six months after that, he had already outlived his prognosis and was filmed at an airport, smiling at photographers and calling himself, only half-facetiously, “a miracle dude.” He even went through with plans to star in “The Beast,” a new drama series for A&E, and filmed a complete season while undergoing treatment. Mr. Swayze insisted on continuing with the series.

“How do you nurture a positive attitude when all the statistics say you’re a dead man?” he said to Bill Carter of The New York Times last October. “You go to work.”

The show, on which he plays an undercover F.B.I. agent, had its premiere in January and earned him admiring reviews.

A week before the series began, Mr. Swayze was the subject of a one-hour “Barbara Walters Special” on ABC, talking about his illness. “I keep my heart and my soul and my spirit open to miracles,” he told Ms. Walters. But he said he was not going to pursue every experimental treatment that came along. If he were to “spend so much time chasing staying alive,” he said, he wouldn’t be able to enjoy the time he had left. “I want to live,” he said.”

The This Is It website allows users to pre-register for tickets.

The sale of the footage of Michael Jackson’s last performance was perhaps the only way concert backer, AEG could stand to recoup millions of dollars lost after the his tour sold out before his untimely death. Jackson approached many companies about a massive comeback tour but AIG was the only company to take on the huge financial risk of backing the frail performer.

TOMS Shoes Gets A Fancy Little Makeover

September 10, 2009 by lalablahblah

toms-shoes

It seems TOMS are everywhere lately, the socially responsible shoes say it all…

They’re like “Hey im stylish, in the know (this style is pre-AT&T commercial Gah!), didnt even try to look this good this morning AND if that doesn’t win you over, i laid down $50 bucks for these so a less fortunate kid could rock a steezy pair themselves.” Gah! You just cant argue with it.

That said, i’m excited for this little Repetto style to make their way onto my Sasquatchen hooves and earn the requisite scuffs and dirt marks that re-affirm how humble and trendy i am…

The Uniform Project

August 19, 2009 by lalablahblah

Could you wear the same outfit everyday for a year? I would lose my F-ing mind (remember how Ginger brought all those sequin dresses? Good move.)

Yes, Sheena Matheiken is doing the unthinkable for a worthy cause.

She will don the same dress (don’t fret germafreaks she has multiples like Superman) for a full year. The challenge is for the charming fashion imp to rework the same black tunic dress into a different chic ensemb each day with vintage and donated accessories.

Matheiken’s penchant towards uniforms stems from her upbringing in India where peers showed their unique style by pushing the limits of their required school uniforms. It seems she aced tricking out the form because some of her daily poses look like Twiggy vs. Hepburn in Opening Ceremony.

She has already raised over 10K in funds for Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for children living in Indian slums.

You can donate cash to the foundation or accessoires to Sheena’s style cache here. Also follow here style safari on Twitter.

Moonwalk Like an Egyptian

An ancient limestone bust of an Egyptian woman housed in Chicago’s Field Museum is garnering some royal attention for resembling none other than the late King of Pop — sans nose and all. The bust is about 3,000 year old and likely received its own nose job courtesy of vandals who seeked to wipe the woman’s face from history.

It gets weirder when you remember the time or rather the music video where MJ was dressed as an Egyptian pop star:

Michael-Jackson-Remember-The-Time_Bone27

Even a spokesperson for the Chicago museum admits to the obvious likeness of Jackson, “I have no idea whether Jackson ever visited the museum,” a Field spokesperson said to the Sun-TimesMichael Sneed. “But the similarity between the limestone statue of a woman – which is about 3,000 years old — and Jackson is astounding.”

Lala Down Under

So i feel bad about not blogging although im getting lot in beautiful Australia. Shouldn’t i be updating the Lala masses (both of them) of my thrilling travels through uncharted lands?

Sounds like a brilliant idea until you are surrounded by unspoiled paradise on a remote island and you couldn’t be fucked to connect yourself to any sense of social contact let alone, the World Wide Web.

The irony of blogging: Once you have something ultra-interesting to blog about, you don’t feel like blogging.

Its true nothing could separate me and my umbrella drink from the white-beach sands of Hamilton Island. Especially not a blog. I was too busy listening tot the wild cockatoos, Lorakeets and Kookaburras chat about who’s palm tree is whose to even look sideways at the pulsating glow-heartbeat of my laptop in its carry-on case.

Anyways i absolutely LOVE OZ! I always feel right at home here– like California but with a tenth of the people (perfection). Here are some good reasons to love Australia:

P1040676

1. Max Music Channel – Their MTV still plays music videos. And on top of that fact they are often a kaleidoscope of the very best vids from the 80’s heydey. The other day i was re-enlightened by a joyous visual lineup which included, Madonna – Like a Prayer, Addicted to Love, Sinea’O Connor – Nothing Compares, Michael Jackson (they always throw an MJ in there for you, Prince – Kiss, AND if they MUST air something from this  decade, they toss you a Kylie Minogue bone and you don’t really mind watching it because youve forgotten what she looks like in that weird futuristically-long white turtleneck dress.

2. Kids still dress like kids. – Aussie kids still wear kids close like orange shirts with a blue t-shirt. Remember those days? No their kids don’t loook like Bratz dolls or badass camouflage rockstars. They have things like happy dinosaurs on their overalls instead of rhinestones on their mini-skirts.

3. Ed Hardy has BARELY made it here. I’ve been here a week and iv’e seen the Ed Hardy look a total of three times. I would turn over my citizenship tot he Australian authority just for the god-given right to look out over a sea of humanity without being visually accosted by skulls and Old English font.

Side Note:

a.k.a. Ryan’s “little bit”: Ed Hardy can stay in America because it’s so fuckin ugly. And the people who wear it have something up their bum.

Amazon.com SOLD OUT of Michael Jackson Music within Minutes

June 26, 2009 by lalablahblah

a04f4a2f-a13f-45f2-ac62-aa1dc8adc977.h2

“Bill Carr, Amazon’s vice president of music and video, said Friday that once the world learned that the pop icon had died Thursday, the Web site sold out within minutes all CDs by Michael Jackson and by the Jackson 5 — the group Jackson and his four older brothers formed out of Gary, Ind., in the late ’60s.

Sixty percent of Amazon’s CD orders Thursday were for Michael Jackson music, something Carr called “stunning.” He said he’d “never seen anything like this” before at Amazon after the death of a pop culture icon.”

As of Friday afternoon, Jackson’s albums accounted for all 10 of Amazon’s “Bestsellers in Music” list, with the 25th anniversary edition of the celebrated “Thriller” album taking the top spot.Meanwhile, Barnes and Noble’s Web site and retail stores are currently sold out of most Jackson CDs, DVDs and books, Chief Merchandising Officer Jaime Carey said. Like Amazon, its 10 bestselling CDs were Jackson titles.

Both companies said they were working to get the products back in stock.

Apple Inc. would not describe the level of demand for Jackson’s music at its iTunes online store, but his dominance of iTunes’ top-seller lists Friday speaks for itself.

Around the time of Jackson’s death, only one of his albums ranked in the top 100 on iTunes in the United States. By Friday morning, eight of the top 10 albums were Jackson’s. An “Essential” collection of Jackson’s songs compiled by Apple’s iTunes music team was the top-selling album, followed by “Thriller.”

Five of Jackson’s singles made it to iTunes’ list of most-purchased tracks — “Man in the Mirror,” “Thriller,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” and “Smooth Criminal” — in what may be one of the best barometers to gauge his most popular songs.

//

With Amazon sold out of Jackson CDs, Carr said many customers were buying Jackson’s music in digital form. Sales of Jackson-related videos are also up on Amazon — Carr said most DVDs, including the 1978 movie musical “The Wiz,” are currently out of stock.

Carr said it was difficult to say whether the increased sales would persist, saying Amazon for now was taking things “minute by minute” and reacting to customers’ orders.

“They love him, he’s a legend, and they’re anxious to make sure they have his music in their collections,” he said.

Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived.

LaToya ran in the hospital sobbing, after Jackson was pronounced dead.

Michael is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince “Blanket” Michael Jackson II.

Jackson had 13 number one hits during his solo career.

Costume Dept. Grows More Than Just Legs With a Full F/W Collection

June 9, 2009 by lalablahblah

lookbook09B.indd

I am absolutely addicted to Costume Dept.’s obscenely loud leggings and now the daring Lycra™  dealers  are expanding to include a full line for F/W09!!!

The predominantly black color pallet might be a startling contrast to their Lisa-Frank-beginning but the smart and versatile noir pieces are the kind of wardrobe ammo that just keeps giving.

I spoke with Owner Shawn Kaleka about Costume Dept. and the new foray into a full-fledged collection.

The smoky-eyed Beau Brummel explains that the fabulous fit can only be attributed to fashion designer ingenue, Shaun Sampson who works under the guidance of greats like Jeremy Scott while completing his study at St. Martin in London.

To know Sampson’s innate talent for draping a woman (or man) is as easy as slipping into a pair of his Ziggy Stardust creations. Uh yeah, i haven’t taken mine off since scoring the gems at a trunk show.

Back to the new line at hand, super-long fringe, androgynous puns and Islamic cultural cues combine in a goth kaleidoscope that’s anything but depressing. The insightful design choices will woo the most daring of boys and girls.

The Men’s lapel tee is obligated to exist… Can i please be quoted on that one?

lookbook09B.indd

The female pieces play dress up a bit more, perhaps a tad more NYC with options like the Grand Floral Leggings like (La Perla for the gams?) or the clever Bustier Top.

lookbook09B.indd

MIA-wannabes can still get their Blanch Devereaux on in leopard spotted lycra or Gucci-esque gold.

lookbook09B.indd

You won’t be paying more for the expanded line, Kaleka stresses one of the top priorities of the brand is high-fashion at a low price point. The go-to F-bombs of color and design still start at just $33.00— Recession Glam, courtesy of Shawn & Shaun.

Shop for Lycra treasure at Costume Dept.com, The full collection is landing in stores in Fall.
